None of them needed Cal’s spy bot to hear the scream.

Alex didn’t remember getting out of the car. One moment he was frozen with shock and the next he was in front of the door, gun drawn.

At his nod, Logan turned the knob and they both lunged through, pacing down the hall toward the room where rising sounds of chaos told them exactly where they needed to go.

From the other direction, Cal, Zach, Charlie, Archie, and Gideon—their weapons also drawn—met them on either side of the wide-open double doors.

Zach and Alex went in first—age had its privileges—and then stopped in shock. But before they could take it in, the others pushed in after him and also jolted to a stop.

Everyone but Nell and two kids—Fancy and Georges, he realized—were standing on chairs, pointing and exclaiming.

Alex blinked. Even old lady St. Cyr had managed to get up on a chair.

Fancy and Georges were chasing two animals wearing dresses—

“It’s an alligator!” Cal yelled.

It twitched around and came toward them.

And yes, they scattered. Someone’s weapon fired, but at the ceiling, releasing a shower of powder.

The cat jumped up on the refreshment table, scattering food, plates, and napkins. It gave a yowl as Georges, with a shout of triumph, dove onto the alligator.

In the sudden silence, Cinzia lifted her plastic cup up to the light. She held a bottle of something boozy in her other hand, so it wasn’t a total surprise she slurred the words.

“My water broke!”

Alex ran to Nell who hadn’t been able to stand up, let alone climb onto a chair. She had managed to lift her feet onto a box sitting the floor. He knelt beside her and felt fluid soaking into his knees.

Her eyes were wide. “My water broke,” she said.

“I said it first,” Cinzia said. “That prize is mine.” Then she hiccuped.
